Lucky Next Door

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!

I had such a great weekend, filled with lots of food and some quality family time with my parents. One of my highlights from this long weekend was visiting a cute little cafe called Lucky Next Door in Burlington, Vermont.

I thought the name of the cafe was a little strange at first, so I looked a bit more into their story. The owners, Charles Reeves and Holly Cluse first opened the Penny Cluse Cafe (which is right next door) in 1998. This cafe was named after Holly's childhood dog, Penny. About 16 years later, Charles and Holly bought the building next door and named it after Charles' father's favourite dog named Lucky - hence Lucky Next Door.

Penny Cluse was closed when we went, but luckily we managed to stop into Lucky Next Door for a quick snack and coffee. The menu was so extensive and covered a lot of ground with everything from burritos and nachos to cakes, soups and salads. Drinks wise, they made all espresso drinks, seasonal juices, smoothies and alcohol!

We also started with a (huge) slice of banana bread with maple walnut cream cheese to share. This was absolutely amazing. Not too sweet, and perfectly moist. The cream cheese on top was such a nice treat.

To drink, I ordered a Mexican hot chocolate which was out of this world!! It tasted like a party in my mouth - seriously, I don't know how else to describe it. It was basically hot chocolate with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and a few other spices. It was the perfect balance between sweet, spice and savoury. It was so delicious - I still can't stop thinking about it!

The cafe itself was so cozy and decorated with paintings by a local artist named Matthew Pardue. You can see some of his work here. It wasn't very busy, but it may have just been because of the long weekend and the time of day that we stopped in.

I plan on attempting to make this hot chocolate closer to Christmas time! Stay tuned!

CIBC Run for the Cure

Today I had such an amazing experience! I participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure for the first time with some of my amazing colleagues. For those of you who don't know what this is about, I strongly urge you to visit their website here to find out more information.

The Run for the Cure happens once a year all across Canada and is one of the largest volunteer events of the year. All of the money raised goes to breast cancer research, health education and advocacy programs.

I know every single person in the world has been touched by some form of cancer. In Canada, it is estimated that 24,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,000 will die from it in 2014. It's important to stay aware of changes in your body and keep healthy and active.

For more information about the foundation or to make a donation to this cause please visit their website.
