Kona Coffee & Company

I visited my old neighbourhood in Chelsea recently and caught up with my good friend J. She suggested that we check out a newly opened cafe in the area called Kona Coffee! Kona's coffee is grown in Hawaii but roasted here in NYC. They have locations in the East Village and Chelsea.

The owner was born and raised in O'ahu, Hawaii where his family started a restaurant. When he moved to NYC, he missed the easy-going and slow lifestyle of his hometown, and the coffee that he grew up drinking. He opened up this cafe in NYC with the goal to bring a piece of the Big Island over to the bustling city. Kona Coffee & Company was founded on the philosophy that a great cafe isn't just a place to enjoy high quality coffee, but a space where New Yorkers from all walks of life can connect and unwind from their busy lives with a cup of coffee.

The cafe is designed to bring a sense of peace and serenity when you step through the doors. The open space and chill vibes allow people the space to relax and catch up with friends, get cozy with a book, or catch up on some work.

I had the signature Hawaiian latte which was infused with coconut and macadamia nut. Pro tip: ask for it with half the amount of syrup so the sugar / flavours don't overwhelm the taste of the espresso! They also offer a few other signature drinks such as their Coconut Matcha and Oat Milk Draft and of course they serve classic coffee, espresso drinks non-coffee drinks and tea. The also serve sandwiches and pastries from local bakeries. My friend enjoyed her blueberry scone with her latte and we will definitely be back!

Black Fox

Black Fox is my newest coffee shop discovery! They have 4 locations throughout the city and I stumped upon the one in midtown, close to my office. Black Fox roasts their own coffee but also sells coffee from various roasters including Square Mile, Nomad, Drop Coffee and Coffee Collective. They also offer a subscription service which is a great gift option for a fellow coffee lover or just for yourself!

Black Fox services everything from coffee to pastries and even offers catering services for person or corporate events! I ordered a chai latte for a change and it was absolutely delicious! Given it's proximity to my office, I know I'll be back here and can't wait to try their drip coffee and espresso drinks too!

Yu and Me Books

Yu and Me Books is a coffee shop, bar and bookstore that focuses on immigrant stories. I loved spending some time at this cute spot in Chinatown. The book selection is awesome and I sipped on a delicious cappuccino made by the owner (I think) while I got lost in the stacks of new releases!

The bookstore was created to increase representation within the literary space, and you can read more about the owner's story here. It's truly the coziest space filled with colourful books, a few comfy couches and some high top seating. Overall, the small (but mighty space) has an incredibly welcoming atmosphere. It made me happy to see how busy it was inside the store as well!

Check out their events list here as well and spot by a book signing or poetry reading next time you're in the area!

Little Canal

Little Canal is the cutest cafe / coffee shop / bar on the border of Chinatown and the Lower East Side.  It had the cutest aesthetic but was packed with people when we stopped by, which I suppose is a great sign!

The menu looked pretty extensive with everything from pastries and cookies to brunch wraps and sandwiches. I loved my cappuccino and it gave me the perfect kick that I needed for my afternoon! If you decide to swing by for takeout, you can always order ahead on their website!
